The Center for Diversity and Inclusion enhances and strengthens Washington University
in St. Louis’ commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive community.
The center’s staff supports and advocates for students from traditionally underrepresented or marginalized populations and creates collaborative partnerships with campus and community members to promote dialogue and social change.

On January 29, Chancellor Mark Wrighton sent a message to the Washington University community about the executive order signed by President Donald J. Trump. Consistent with the Chancellor’s message, we want to emphasize the need to continue to be a community where all feel welcomed, respected, and affirmed. The staff at the Center for Diversity and Inclusion and the Office for International Students and Scholars invite you to our spaces to find community and seek support. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us for information on resources, support services, and ways to practice self-care. Additionally, the Bias Report and Support System (BRSS) is a place where students can report instances of bias or discrimination that is perceived to be motivated by an identity. Reports can be made online or in person at the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, located in the Danforth University Center, Suite 330.


In the university’s core mission to develop students as future leaders in the diverse global community of the 21st Century, the Center for Diversity and Inclusion serves as an integral part. Key areas of focus include advocacy, support, collaboration, and education and outreach.

Center for Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Directions

  • To engage students in intentional, reflective and applied learning experiences related to identity, intercultural and cross-cultural communication, and diversity and social justice concepts.
  • To cultivate and foster a supportive campus climate for students of all backgrounds, cultures and identities.
  • To advocate for traditionally underrepresented, underserved, and/or marginalized student populations and institutional change in the areas of diversity, inclusion and equity.
  • To create collaborative partnerships with constituents within the university and broader communities for student engagement and the promotion of dialogue and social change.
  • To develop sustainable infrastructure and operational and governance models to further the vision, mission and goals of the center.
